PRESS RELEASE “Eat that Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words” - Film evening on April 21, 2023 in the Auditorium Hamm with director Thorsten Schütte
Hamm 02/23/2023 // Composer, musician, band leader and producer: For more than four decades, Frank Zappa embodied a charismatic and uncompromising voice of criticism in the music industry. The German filmmaker and native of Hammer Thorsten Schütte paid tribute to him and his work in the fast-paced homage "Eat that Question: Frank Zappa in his own Words", which premiered at the renowned Sundance Festival in 2016. The Auditorium Hamm invites Zappa fans and those interested in the film to the screening on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 4:30 p.m., followed by an exclusive discussion with the director.
Whether pop, jazz, rock or orchestral compositions: with virtuoso nonchalance and biting humor, Zappa moved almost revolutionary between pop culture entertainment and avant-garde.
The idea for "Eat that Question" came to Schütte in 2008: Since then he has delved deep into archives worldwide and meticulously compiled previously lost and forgotten film and audio documents, TV interviews and rare footage from numerous performances and concert recordings. conducted over a period of 25 years.
The result is a multifaceted portrait of the self-taught Zappa, who was considered an eccentric, sharp-tongued nonconformist throughout his life. Schütte lets the maestro, whose trademark was his black, curly mane and his black, T-shaped beard, speak for himself.
The film was received enthusiastically and has since been shown at countless festivals. It premiered at the renowned Sundance Festival in 2016, where Sony acquired the worldwide rights.
Zappa fans can be happy: The Auditorium Hamm will show the collage-like homage "Eat That Question" on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 4:30 p.m., and invites you to the subsequent, exclusive discussion with filmmaker Schütte. What perhaps hardly anyone knows: Schütte is a native of Hamm. “As a teenager, I pressed my nose flat against the auditorium window,” says Schütte, looking forward to the screening in Hamm. He experienced his Zappa initiation in music class at the time, when his teacher played "Who Are The Brain Police".
After the film screening, Schütte will talk about the making of his film and about scenes that have been omitted. Günter Köster and Jörg Hoffmann from the Auditorium provide the musical soundtrack.
