In any power cord—especially stranded cords—distortion is added, no matter how perfect the power source. Even the most sophisticated filters and power supplies cannot prevent this cable-induced distortion.
SEMI-SOLID CONCENTRIC PACKED CONDUCTORS: The semi-solid, concentrically arranged conductors are used in some AudioQuest power and speaker cables because they provide a cost-effective, flexible alternative to traditional stranded conductors. Semi-Solid Concentric Packed conductors use fewer and larger strands that maintain their relative position throughout the cable length. While solid conductors provide the ultimate solution to stranded-induced distortion, semi-solid concentric packed conductors avoid many of the causes of distortion in stranded conductors.
LONG-GRAIN COPPER (LGC): Long-grain copper (LGC) enables a more balanced, clearer sound than cables with the usual oxygen-free, highly conductive copper (OFHC - Oxygen-Free-High-Conductivity). OFHC is a general metals industry specification that considers “losses” without any allowance for distortion. LGC contains fewer oxides in the conductive material, fewer impurities, fewer grain boundaries and clearly offers better performance. NRG-X3 cables incorporate LGC strands in a semi-solid concentric packed conductor construction.
HELIX GEOMETRY: The relationship between the individual conductors defines the basic electrical properties of a cable (capacitance and inductance). However, even when these variables are kept in a sensible balance, the relationship between the conductors can vary in a way that greatly affects the sound. The helical arrangement (e.g. as a round spiral) enables significantly better dynamics and information clarity than with parallel routing or as multiple stranded pairs of the same conductors.
COLD WELDING SYSTEM: This connector design enables a perfectly heat-free connection between cable and connector. The connection between the plug and the conductors is made using AQ's cold welding system. This creates a high quality connection that fully preserves the structural integrity of the ladder. The cold welding system consists of a combination of high pressure at the point of contact to make the joint and the use of copper or silver impregnated paste.
