Founded in 1990 by Richard Edward Lord, REL Acoustics is a British company specialising in the manufacture of high quality subwoofers. The creation of REL Acoustics is based on Richard's passion for sound and his many years of experience in the audio industry.

Before founding REL, Lord worked in various areas of loudspeaker development and had access to technologies and design principles that he wanted to implement in his own company. He realized that many subwoofers on the market did not offer the precision and musicality he was looking for. This led him to the goal of developing a product that could not only reproduce low frequencies, but also musical detail and clarity
