The SPM 1200MkII power amplifier has received numerous awards and prizes around the world since its release. This is once again due to the fact that Chord uses only the latest and often unique and innovative technologies in its products. So Chord swears by the so-called dynamic coupling within the power supply. A positive load is always accompanied by a negative power to the same extent and vice versa. This leads to an always even power output and avoids interference from ground loops.

In addition, this form of power supply delivers quickly available and very controlled power at all times and makes a decisive contribution to the fact that the SPM 1200MkII sounds so light-footed and sovereign. The high-frequency power supply used, with a low equivalent series resistance, operates at a nominal voltage of around 90 volts, far more than most other amplifiers. It can therefore store far more energy and make it available much more quickly, so clipping is virtually impossible. In addition, the use of this power supply allows the SPM 1200MkII to be much lighter than other amplifiers in this power class at only 18 kg. The protective circuit of the SPM 1200MkII is also a new development and reliably protects the device against overload and internal or external short circuits. It does so without any fuses or other sound-damaging components in the signal path, which are often found in other products.

In the amplifier section, Chord uses only the best high-performance MOSFETs, no fewer than 16 per channel. The SPM 1200MkII is designed as a Class A/B amplifier, at normal volumes the vast majority of music is amplified in Class A mode. Like all Chord Electronics products, the SPM 1200MkII is largely handcrafted to the highest quality standards.

Numerous detailed improvements have been incorporated into the current “MkII” version of the SPM 1200:
