Flexibility in handling and uncompromising manufacturing are responsible for the character of this bolide, which weighs between 50 and 60 kilos, depending on the version. The drive can be individually tuned both in terms of sound and appearance like hardly any other - every Sperling drive is custom-made. If you are interested, please contact us before ordering.
The base is a solid aluminum carrier on which two tonearm bases for one tonearm between 9 'and 12' in length are mounted. The innovative rotating mechanism allows both tonearms to be set at any distance and at any angle to the turntable despite the most stable screw connection. The turntable itself is turned from a special aluminum alloy from the solid. Exchangeable inserts are attached to the precision milled surface, which form the link between the record and the platter. We have inserts made of different materials (various woods, acrylic, POM and more). This gives the listener the opportunity to adapt the tonal characteristics to personal taste. The same principle can also be found in the tonearm bases. Here, too, interchangeable elements make it possible to individually tune the sound of each of the two mountable tonearms.
Innovation meets practicality: The tonearm bases have a scale on the top. This little finesse makes it possible at any time to dismantle a once set and adjusted tonearm / system combination including its base plate and to reassemble it in exactly the same position within a few minutes. This is particularly interesting for everyone who has more than two tonearms and wants to change them every now and then - whether between the two bases of the drive or even between different Sperling drives!
The belt tension between the motor and the turntable has a not inconsiderable influence on the sound of solid drives. That is why the new motor box belonging to the drive offers the possibility of changing the belt tension with the help of a very sensitive adjustment system during operation. In this way, the user can adjust his device at any time according to the type of music and personal taste in sound.
The drive is available in two colors: silver (glass bead blasted with subsequent anodization) and black (powder coating with a particularly elegant, finely structured surface). Other designs are possible on request and at an extra charge.

Tonearm bases with turntable mechanism
Every tonearm on the market is individual in its type and construction. And its installation position on the drive is just as individual. There are many parameters that have to be taken into account. Be it the mounting distance, the angle to the plate or the consideration of the anti-skating zero position. However, one important prerequisite must apply to all arms at the same time: They must be very firmly and solidly connected to the drive. In order to be able to realize this balancing act between flexible installation positions and the stable construction, the tonearm bases of our L-1 have an ingenious turntable mechanism, which allows to mount tonearms from 9 'to 12' in length. Each tonearm / system combination is mounted on an individually tailored plate. This small plate is rotatably mounted eccentrically in a larger plate. Both the large and the small turntable have elongated holes that allow further flexibility in the position. This offers the possibility of setting any mounting distance at any angle. The starting position of the respective tonearm can also be taken into account and precisely set if this should be necessary for setting the anti-skating zero position.
Turntable with scaling
The correct assembly and adjustment of a tonearm / system combination is a very time-consuming and difficult job. Owners of several tonearms often have the problem that when changing an arm this adjustment work is lost due to the dismantling and when reassembling later on completely new due to scaling from 0-360 ° around both the large and the small turntable. There are letters on the edges of the turntables, namely A - B - C - D on the large plates and a - b - c - d on the inner small plates. If you leave the tonearm mounted on its small platter during dismantling, it is sufficient to note the respective angle for a small and a large letter. In this way, the arm can be reinstalled at a later point in time with the aid of these values exactly as it was before dismantling. And not only on the same tonearm base, but also on every other Sperling drive. So it is no longer a problem to 'just' mount a different arm for one or the other record to hear what it sounds like. The installation of an arm with known values only takes a few minutes.
Adjustable belt tension
The drive has a not inconsiderable influence on the tonal characteristics of a bulk drive. This also includes the type of drive belt, which in our experience should be without stretch. This creates a rigid coupling between the drive and the turntable, which in conjunction with a controlled motor enables the best sound results. But there is another variable that should not be ignored when making fine adjustments: the belt tension. Normally you have to move the drive motor to adjust the belt tension; sometimes this is not even possible because the motor is permanently installed in its position. In practice, this means: get up from the listening position, raise the tone arm, move the motor as carefully as possible, lower your arm and listen. Until the best result is achieved. With the Sperling L-1 this is solved simply but effectively: the motor socket offers the possibility of changing the belt tension with the help of a precise adjustment system during operation. In this way, you can search for the optimal sound image without interrupting your listening and adjust it very sensitively in a simple way.
Variations
When designing your drive, you can choose between very different materials, such as acrylic, POM or wood. As standard we deliver acrylic in black or white, POM in black and wood, for example in: maple, American walnut, cherry rosewood, wenge, beech, zebrawood, mahogany. Other types of wood on request. Wooden parts are generally made from one solid piece . With certain types of wood, it may be necessary to work with veneer if a solid construction is not possible due to the properties of the wood. An example of this is Makassar ebony. On request - and for particularly exotic woods at an extra charge - we always have an open ear for extravagant ideas. Wood is a natural product. Each delivery is unique. Due to the characteristics typical of the type of wood, all parts of a drive are made from one piece. Therefore, it is not possible to draw conclusions about the overall picture of the finished device from a sample, it can only serve as a guide. Deviations from the pattern in color and structure are possible.
