AudioQuest introduces Aspen, the new entry-level cable in the Baum series of speaker cables. Aspen, like the other Baum series speaker cables, features many of the tried and tested AQ design elements such as Perfect Surface metals and optimized conductor sizes (AQ's proprietary Spread Spectrum technology), and also incorporates significant newer developments such as Double Counter Spiral geometry, AudioQuest's proprietary patented Dielectric Bias System (DBS) and Noise Dissipation System (NDS).

The Double Counter Spiral geometry is based on the careful arrangement of conductors of different sizes and, in this case, different metals (Perfect Surface Copper and Perfect Surface Copper+) in each conductor section of the cable. In each of these conductor compartments, the negative conductors are spiraled around the positive conductors in one direction, while the positive conductors are spiraled in the opposite direction. This results in a geometry that is as close to self-shielding as possible. The resulting reduction in distortion is audibly expressed as a focused, three-dimensional and immersive sound that supports AQ's fundamental goal of causing no damage to the original signal.

AudioQuest also offers the option of single bi-amping on all 'Rocket', 'Rock' and 'Tree' speaker cables, including the Aspen . Similar to single bi-wiring, where the cable on the speaker side consists of four individual strands, single bi-amping has four conductors on the amplifier side. This is convenient for those who want to use all amplifier channels on current AV receivers and multi-channel power amplifiers. As with the other speaker cables in the 'Tree' series, the individual eight-conductor sections in the Aspen are magnetically independent, allowing true double bi-wiring with a single attractive cable. The Aspen is of course also suitable for full double bi-wiring, which undeniably still offers advantages in many applications.

A new feature in the Aspen (as well as all other 'Tree' and 'Rock' series speaker cables) are the sleek new 'Hanging Silver' 1000 multi-lugs and bananas. Originally developed for the WEL Signature Series speaker cables, these plugs are manufactured using a 'Hanging Silver Over Pure Red-Copper' process in which the lugs and banana plugs are immersed ('hung') in a vat of extremely high purity silver, resulting in a very thick direct silver plating. No performance-degrading materials (such as nickel or alloys) are used as interlayers.

Also new to the Aspen is the improved breakout (the point where the cable splits into the red and black end pieces), which is now made of synthetic, non-magnetic polymer rather than metal. The idea behind all of these improvements is that speaker and power cables carry large magnetic fields that would react with any metal 'collar' on the cable.

Removing metal from the breakouts is another significant (and clearly audible) step towards AQ's goal of eliminating distortion and making the cable as sonically 'invisible' as possible.

The Aspen is a worthy addition to the 'Baum' series and continues AudioQuest's already impressive line of high-quality, high-performance speaker cables.
