Dali Epicon 8
The top model of the EPICON series, the EPICON 8 floorstanding loudspeaker, impresses not only with its elegant appearance, but also with an extremely expressive, detailed and natural sound of the highest quality. The EPICON 8 captivates the listener both with soft tones with a multi-faceted and spatially finely structured sound image, but can also set louder and impulsive music in a powerful and gripping scene.
EISA, an association of 50 consumer electronics magazines from 20 European countries, was so enthusiastic about the new DALI flagship that it just presented the EPICON 8 with the EISA Award as the best high-end product of 2012/13. Quotation from the laudation: 'The loudspeaker builds up a broad spectrum that is lavishly designed with details and also fills large rooms with music in a fascinating way.'
Assembly
Two 200 mm woofers provide a deep bass foundation for the EPICON 8. They work so powerfully that a separate subwoofer is no longer necessary, even in larger rooms or with higher playback levels. The 165 mm cone placed at the upper end of the baffle acts as a mid-range speaker and, like the two bass chassis, has the DALI-exclusive, revolutionary linear drive magnet system. The legendary DALI combination of fabric dome and ribbon is ultimately responsible for reproducing the high and highest frequencies. This combined unique 3 ½-way system gives the largest member of the EPICON family its overwhelming sound quality.
Multi-layer housing
Each side part of the EPICON 8 consists of six individual, glued together layers of MDF panels. These are firmly anchored to a 63 mm thick, multi-layered MDF rear wall. In order to maintain control even at the lowest frequencies, the rear wall of the EPICON 8 is 10 mm thicker than that of the EPICON 6 and EPICON 2. The ultra-precise recesses and holes for the bass reflex openings and connection fields on the rear of the housing are created with CNC milling.
The 33 mm thick two-layer front wall ensures that the energy mobilized by the drivers is also used acoustically and is not lost in the form of housing vibrations. The curved shape of the front wall also helps to provide an acoustic platform that is as stable and torsion-resistant as possible.
Inside the housing of the EPICON 8 offers two chambers of the same size for the two woofers and another separate chamber for the midrange. The two bass chassis each have an identical, but completely independent volume. Thanks to its own self-contained housing, the midrange is able to reproduce the particularly critical mid-range frequencies that are in the range of the human voice without the interference of the other chassis.
On the back of the case, in close proximity to the woofers, you will find the two corresponding bass reflex openings. The reflex tubes are curved outwards at both ends to avoid disruptive turbulence. The hard-wired crossover network is also fixed in its own housing on the bottom of the housing - and is therefore not exposed to the dynamic changes in air pressure within the bass reflex housing chambers.
The division of the housing into several separate, completely separate volumes contributes just as much to the unique sound experience of the EPICON 8 as the carefully positioned housing struts or the consideration of the DALI principle of ensuring optimal timing and unhindered airflow in every respect.
