This device is a used item. It is in good condition.

The Cambridge Audio Azur 851N is a powerful network player, digital preamplifier, and D/A converter in one device. It is aimed at audiophile music lovers who demand the highest sound quality and versatile connectivity. The 851N combines precise digital signal processing, flexible streaming capabilities, and high-quality analog technology, making it a central component in both classic hi-fi systems and modern multi-room setups.

The device allows the integration of a wide variety of audio sources – from network and streaming services to TV signals and computer audio – delivering precise, transparent, and detailed playback. Its modular design and consistently digital signal path minimize distortion, maximize dynamic range, and produce a very clean sound.

Technology & Signal Processing

At the heart of the 851N are two high-precision digital-to-analog converters that transform digital signals into high-quality analog signals. A powerful upsampling system processes audio up to 24-bit/384 kHz and allows the selection of various filter modes to tailor the sound to personal preferences or room acoustics.

The digital signal path is complemented by a high-quality analog output filter, designed for both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) outputs. This ensures clean, neutral, and detailed reproduction, with precise rendering of voices, instruments, and timbres. The internal processing also supports high-resolution audio formats such as FLAC, WAV, ALAC, DSD, and many more, guaranteeing maximum flexibility for digital music libraries.

Streaming and sources

The Azur 851N offers comprehensive networking capabilities. Music files can be played from NAS systems, computers, or online streaming services via LAN or WLAN. Popular services such as Qobuz, TIDAL, and Spotify Connect, as well as internet radio, are supported.

In addition to network streaming, external sources can be integrated via digital inputs such as AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF, and optical Toslink connections. A USB-B port allows connection to computers and supports high-resolution audio. A Bluetooth receiver is available as an option for wireless connection of mobile devices.

Thanks to the StreamMagic app, the 851N can be conveniently controlled from a smartphone or tablet. It allows browsing through local libraries, controlling streaming services, selecting filters, and adjusting sound parameters.

Operation & Display

Operation is possible via the front panel buttons, the StreamMagic app, or the clearly structured color display on the front. The 4.3-inch TFT display clearly shows information such as album art, track details, and selected filter modes. The intuitive user interface allows for easy navigation through sources, networks, and streaming services.

The device also offers digital volume control and a channel balance function that precisely adjusts the sound to the listening room or personal preferences. The combination of high-quality electronics, display, and app control ensures maximum convenience and full control over the audio signal.

Sound character & practical experience

The 851N delivers exceptionally clear, transparent, and detailed sound reproduction. Vocals are well-defined, instrumental nuances are precisely rendered, and even complex passages remain intelligible at all times. Upsampling contributes to the particularly fine and dynamic reproduction of high-resolution sources.

Thanks to its digital preamplifier mode, the 851N can be directly connected to power amplifiers or active speakers, offering maximum flexibility. The sound is open, natural, and controlled, with a solid bass foundation, clear midrange, and defined treble.
