Preamplifiers are the most important components of a high-end system. They should switch the small signals of the connected source devices in the input section, amplify them, regulate the volume, process them if necessary and make them available at the outputs for the power amplifiers. And all this without changing or falsifying the information content
The preamp
In order for this to succeed perfectly, we drive an enormous effort. The devices are fully symmetrical and discreet, only equipped with the best components and equipped with uncompromisingly designed housings. The design and concept of the P 3100 HV is based on the P 3000 HV. On the outside, the only difference is the type designation. In terms of circuitry, however, the entire preamplifier section, and thus the most important part, has been improved again.
Until now, the input and output stages of the P 3000 HV have been coupled to the relay volume control using high-quality capacitors. Thanks to a new, very complex circuit board layout in the P 3100 HV, the temperature coefficients of the transistors now compensate each other and the operating points can be set precisely, which means that the preamplifier stages have pure DC coupling. There are no longer any coupling capacitors in the signal path between the input stage, volume control and output stage. The preamp board is absolutely voltage and temperature stable. In addition, we have equipped the digital power supply with more power and shielded it even better. The already oversized toroidal transformer of the analogue part was increased to 115 VA. The sum of these measures leads to a significant improvement in sound.
technology
In the ingenious HV = High Voltage concept developed by T+A, all amplifier stages work with significantly higher operating voltages than is normally the case: 100 volts in the preamplifier and 360 volts in the output stages. Similar to tube amplifiers, the actual modulation of all stages remains very small. Only a very small portion of the amplifier transistors' characteristic is used (less than 20%), so their characteristic curvature (non-linearity) is virtually eliminated. In addition, further measures are used to linearize the voltage amplifier stages. Due to the high operating voltages, an extremely high dynamic range is achieved in addition to high linearity. We have developed this unique technology for all devices, because the sound improvements that can be achieved are not only enormous in preamplifiers and power amplifiers, but of course also in the output stages of source devices such as the Multi Source Player MP 3100 HV.
The back shows the symmetrical, double mono structure of the P 3100 HV. The channels are consistently separated. The preamplifier boards are located under the housing cover and are designed symmetrically. This eliminates electromagnetic influences. They are located in their own compartment made of thick-walled (10 to 15 mm) aluminum plates and are completely isolated and shielded from the power supply and the power supply in the lower part of the housing. The circuit topology is based on a cascode differential amplifier with hand-selected audio J-FET transistors and fully discrete stages without operational amplifiers. Unlike normal operational amplifiers, they do not derive their linearity from "hard" negative feedback, but from the quality of the circuit topology and the components used, which are carefully selected and adjusted. Therefore, practically no overall negative feedback is necessary. Thanks to HV technology, signals up to 80 Vpp can be processed without distortion. This value is unique for transistor amplifiers.
