An external phono preamplifier is indispensable if the existing amplifier does not have a connection for a turntable or the built-in phono preamplifier does not meet the quality requirements of the music lover. The connection is then made to a high-level input of the amplifier. Every pickup plays best in the optimal electrical environment. It is therefore an advantage if a phono preamplifier can be sensitively adjusted to the requirements of the pickup in terms of the terminating capacity, the terminating resistance and its gain.

The two ECC83 tubes (internationally referred to as 12AX7) protruding from the top of the housing for better heat dissipation (and a nicer look) are high-quality double triodes according to a standard that has been produced hundreds of thousands of times. The supply of these tubes is absolutely secured. In the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2, they are also protected from vibrations that are harmful to the sound by a sophisticated damping element, which also serves as additional cooling.

Two inputs and outputs: This allows operation with two turntables or a turntable with two tone arms, as well as the connection of two amplifiers. The device has a wide range of setting options for the termination capacity of MM, moving iron and high-output MC pickups as well as the terminating resistor for low-output MC pickups. The terminating resistor for low-output MC pickups can be continuously adjusted while listening using the rotary control on the front of the device. The amplification can be set in five stages. The gain setting is not linked to an operating mode. All settings can be used for the operating modes MM and MC.

The settings for adjusting MM, moving iron and high-output MC pickups, the gain and the subsonic filter can be created and saved individually for both inputs. When selecting an input, the saved settings are loaded automatically. The individually created settings are stored in a permanent memory, so they are not lost even if the device is disconnected from the power supply.

Very practical: switching voltage input for switching the device on and off remotely. The preamplifiers of the DS2 line, Pro-Ject Pre Box DS2 Analogue and Pro-Ject Pre Box DS2 Digital, as well as the integrated amplifiers of the DS2 line, Pro-Ject MaiA DS2 and Pro-Ject Stereo Box DS2, give, corresponding to the standard By button, a 12V switching voltage off. Connected with switching cables, several devices of the DS2 line can be conveniently switched on and off together with a push of a button on one of the preamplifiers, the integrated amplifier or their remote controls.
