The reference magnetostats from FINAL in an open design are true masterpieces in precision housings made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy with a resonance-reducing coating.
With their completely new thinking, the FINAL team has found the ultimate design for magnetostats. First, FINAL opted for a round driver diaphragm with an inwardly wound, circular band of aluminum as the voice coil. Second, in the D8000 models, these conductive paths are not attached to the membrane with an adhesive (as in many other planar magnetic constructions), but are etched into the surface of the foil membrane material as an ultra-thin aluminum coating. This leads to a moving mass that is one third lighter than with comparable dynamic driver assemblies. And third, the diaphragm has concentric corrugations that allow the diaphragm to move more linearly across its entire working surface. By doing without the usual voice coil glue and a corrugated membrane, the D8000 drivers achieve an absolutely superior reproduction of even the most subtle high frequencies. And last but not least, the AFDS (Air Film Damping System) technology eliminates the deflection problems that usually occur with magnetostats by perfectly controlling the membrane movement even at high volumes by means of an air damping layer.
