Concert hall meets living room: A "Model D" system from Steinway-Lyngdorf faced a direct comparison with a real grand piano Bringing the concert experience into your living room is the goal of every hi-fi fan, but only a few systems in the world truly achieve this. That’s why the team at Auditorium Münster took quite a bold step when they set up a grand piano for a direct comparison with a hi-fi system from Steinway-Lyngdorf at Pianohaus Micke in Münster. Read more here about this successful experiment! From the very beginning, the collaboration between the instrument maker Steinway and the audio specialists from Lyngdorf aimed for the best possible playback quality and musicality—a standard that Steinway-Lyngdorf systems certainly fulfill in a way that few other systems can. Still, it takes courage to compare an original Steinway concert grand piano, played by a true master, in front of a critical audience, with any kind of hi-fi system. However, as the enthusiastic reactions of the over 100 guests who had gathered at the Steinway Galerie Micke showed, the experiment was worthwhile in every respect. The evening was hosted by Leonhard Schwarte, founder of Auditorium; Hans-Heinrich Schalkowski from Steinway & Sons as well as Peter Lyngdorf himself also came to Münster to answer visitors’ questions.

Young Pianist as the Star of the Evening

The only 13-year-old pianist Minha Marie Yeo thrilled the audience. However, the star of the evening was neither the elegant Steinway grand piano nor the high-quality music system. Both were effortlessly outshone by the just 13-year-old Minha Marie Yeo. The young student from the University of Music in Hanover played the grand piano with virtuosity and impressively demonstrated why she is considered one of the great piano talents in the country. Especially exciting: the selection of classical works performed by Minha Marie Yeo was directly compared to recordings of the same works, played back on the large "Model D" system from Steinway-Lyngdorf.

Hearing Every Detail

Here, the system impressed especially with its great attention to detail, making subtle differences in the interpretation of various pianists clearly audible. Just how close a truly good system can come to 'real' life was demonstrated by the "Model D" with a special recording made the day before with Minha Marie Yeo in the rooms of Steinway Galerie Micke. Such a comparison under almost identical conditions—same instrument, same pianist, same room—is truly rare and amazed the audience. Most of those present probably could not have heard any difference between the original and the 'imitation'. This successful experiment showed why the enormous effort Steinway-Lyngdorf puts into the development, production, and tuning of their hi-fi systems is worthwhile, because only then are truly authentic listening experiences like this possible. You can find more information about the hi-fi systems from Steinway-Lyngdorf by visiting Auditorium Münster or Hamm and hearing them for yourself!
