High-end in Sheep’s Clothing – Dynaudio Excite Series
In the Danish town of Skanderborg, Dynaudio has been developing and manufacturing its speakers since 1977. Rarely is this statement as justified as it is here, because, apart from perhaps a few crossover components, Dynaudio actually builds everything itself, including cabinets and drivers.
This even applies to the Excite series, which has served as the entry point into the Dynaudio sound world for years and has been revised several times. In a price range that many competitors can no longer or do not want to serve without at least partially moving production to the Far East, even the small X14 is made entirely in Denmark.
The compact X14 bookshelf speaker has proven its remarkable sound potential in numerous tests. For example, Stephan Schmid from i-fidelity.net awarded the little one from Skanderborg a distinction as a "Highlight". But the X14 has another special feature: in the discreetly named X14A version, it comes as a powerful active speaker that, together with a preamplifier or streamer with a variable output, can form a state-of-the-art hi-fi system.
At the other end of the range sits the large Excite X44, but the two smaller floor-standing speakers X38 and X34 are perhaps even more interesting. In terms of sound, they are almost on par with the 44, but visually they are a bit more understated due to their smaller size. Michael Bruss on fairaudio.de attested the X38 a homogeneous and natural sound "far beyond its price range," and Jürgen Schröder in Fidelity called the X34 "musically captivating".
All Excite models share a special crossover design, which, through targeted phase adjustments, causes the speaker to radiate sound slightly upwards. This reduces floor reflections, leads to more detailed imaging and better spatiality, and improves the listening experience even when you're moving around the room rather than sitting glued to your listening spot.
