Noble sound in private: Focal Elegia headphones

Even though they have only been present on the headphone market for a few years, the Elear, Utopia, and Clear models from the French brand are already recognized as some of the best headphones in their respective classes. What they all have in common is the so-called open construction without a sealing outer shell, which typically allows for an open and spacious sound. The downside is that you’re practically wearing small loudspeakers on your ears, so those around you can share in your music enjoyment at almost the same volume.
Of course, the reverse is also true: all surrounding noises penetrate almost unfiltered to your ears, so true music enjoyment is really only possible in a truly quiet environment. But the days when high-quality headphones were used exclusively at home are long gone. "Mobile high-end" is now a global trend, with expensive mobile players like the models from Astell & Kern or portable high-end DACs like Chord Mojo or Chord Hugo now delivering an extremely high sound quality on the go, often better than what many people can enjoy at home.

So it only makes sense that Focal is introducing a high-quality headphone that effectively blocks out environmental noise while also protecting those around you from unwanted music. Many of the technologies used were originally developed for the open models, such as the drivers with their M-shaped domed diaphragm made from a magnesium-aluminum alloy. However, these drivers have been optimized here for mobile use, so the Elegia boasts an impedance of just 35 ohms and can thus be used effortlessly with almost any mobile player or smartphone.
Additionally, the developers have come up with some clever tricks to overcome the bass limitations that conventional closed-back headphones typically have. The French managed to implement a kind of internal bass reflex system in the smallest of spaces, so that the Elegia doesn’t fall behind its open-brand siblings in any relevant frequency range.

As you would expect from the brand, the materials used and the build quality are at the highest level. Perforated genuine leather on the headband meets high-tech microfiber and extremely comfortable memory foam in the ear cushions. The construction is held together by solid milled aluminum components. Despite the luxurious variety of materials, the Elegia remains light enough for hours of music enjoyment at just 430 grams.
If you’re looking for the best possible mobile music experience and use a high-quality mobile DAC or player, you should definitely give the Focal Elegia a listen. For example, in our stores in Hamm or Münster, where the Elegia is now available for demonstration. We look forward to your visit!
