With a projector, motorized screen, and surround system, you can already achieve great results in your living room, but a dedicated cinema in a specially optimized room is still the dream of many movie fans. It was perfect timing that a room in the basement of his house in the Ruhr area became available, one that was just the right size for a cozy cinema. From the very first moment, you can tell that a true film enthusiast was in charge here, and not just because the walls feature posters of classics like "Doctor Zhivago" right next to posters from "The Lord of the Rings" saga. More importantly, the owner has managed to create an incredibly cozy atmosphere here, despite all the cinema optimization. Among other things, this is achieved through a thoughtfully designed LED lighting concept, which, controlled by a small Control4 system, can cover everything from bright as day to atmospheric in all the colors of the spectrum.
The double seat covered in red leather practically invites you to sink in, the plush carpet pampers your feet, and also plays a significant role in the successful acoustics of the room. A few strategically placed damping elements on the walls and ceiling were all it took to get the reverberation time just right: damped enough for fantastic sound reproduction, but still lively enough that you feel comfortable there for longer periods.
The selected speakers are just about perfect for a cinema of this size. Three built-in DALI Phantom S-180 speakers, hidden behind the acoustically transparent screen, create a harmonious sound image together with the four visible Rubicon LCR speakers from the Danish manufacturer, providing more than enough punch. The system is supplemented by four smaller versions of the Phantom, recessed in the ceiling as Atmos speakers. And since the owner's diverse taste in films sometimes calls for a real bang, four DALI subwoofers deliver a satisfying bass rumble when needed. The brain of this powerful home cinema system is Yamaha's large CX-5100 amplifier, which manages the switching and distribution of all sources. The matching 11-channel MX-A5000 amplifier provides the necessary power.
Of course, there could be no compromises when it came to the picture either. The 4K projector Sony VPL-VW760ES offers exactly the brilliant and natural image quality that a cinephile expects and that this elaborately designed little cinema deserves.
With plenty of creative design ideas, lots of the owner's own work, and the advice of our experts, a cinema has been created here that is just right as it is. Not too big, not too small.
