THORENS TD 1500
In 1965, the Thorens TD 150, an inconspicuous little drive, came onto the market and thus started a technical revolution in turntable construction. For the first time, a spring-loaded sub-chassis with an inner plate driven by a ground flat belt was used in a large-scale device.
The new Thorens TD 1500, which, like its famous role model, can be operated purely manually, has a sub-chassis that decouples the turntable and tone arm board from the motor and frame by means of three conical springs. In contrast to the TD 150, these springs can be adjusted from above through corresponding holes in the turntable, which makes correct adjustment much easier.
The speed of the DC motor is electronically monitored by an incremental encoder and deviations, e.g. caused by a moving broom, are automatically corrected. This also enables very good synchronization values. As a real unique selling point in its class, the TD 1500 also has XLR outputs in addition to the usual pair of cinch sockets, and thus enables true symmetrical operation with a suitable MC pickup.
The J-shaped Thorens TP 150 tonearm with SME connector, equipped with a mounted Ortofon 2M bronze pickup, was newly developed in (optical) style based on the legendary TP 14 ancestor and the current TP 124. The TD 1500 can be connected to the phono input either via RCA or XLR
