The McIntosh MC901 AC is a truly unique monobloc power amplifier and in many ways the ultimate solution for bi-amping loudspeakers.
What makes the MC901 AC so unique is the combination of two amplifiers in one. Each amplifier has a different design: The MC901 AC consists of a 300 watt tube power amp combined with a 600 watt transistor power amp. The 300-watt tube section supplies the middle and upper drivers, while the 600-watt transistor output stage supplies the power-hungry woofers.
A small sensation is the integrated, adjustable crossover, which optimizes the performance of both amplifier sections as desired. A perfect separation can take place here, so that the transfer point for both frequency paths can be precisely defined and adapted to the loudspeakers.
The full power is always available to the loudspeakers - regardless of whether they have an impedance of 2, 4 or 8 ohms. On the one hand via the Unity-Coupled-Circuit output transformer in the tube power amp, on the other hand via the Autoformer™ in the transistor section.
Each of the two amplifiers has a completely independent power supply, so that neither currents nor power have to be divided.
The MC901 AC features the gorgeous new DualView™ VU meter, which displays the real-time power output of each amplifier section.
For the benefit of power amplifiers and loudspeakers, Power Guard® prevents distortion and clipping. The new Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor™ (SGS) helps prevent premature tube failure by monitoring the current of the screen grid in the KT88 output tubes. If exceeded, Power Guard SGS™ reduces the input signal in real time to keep the tubes in a safe range.
