Twice As Good!
In addition to the recently introduced MC611 AC monoblock, the MC462 AC stereo power amplifier is McIntosh's next milestone in the current amplifier update.
Like the almost legendary predecessor MC452 AC, the MC462 AC comes with two times 450 watts of power and a proud 52 kg, although it has received numerous updates and improvements. As with the new monoblock MC611 AC, the filter capacity of the filter capacitors has also been almost doubled on the 462! In the case of the MC462 AC, this leads to a remarkable 66% increase in the "dynamic headroom" and is known to help to significantly improve the performance of the deep bass signals and to reproduce sudden dynamic jumps without distortion.
In addition, new high-current output transistors minimize delays based on thermal imbalance so radically that they operate at optimal performance under any load. Compared to the predecessor, all these measures result in a significantly improved sound!
There are six sets of in-house SolidCinch™ connections on the back for connecting the speaker cables. In addition, the MC462 has an energy management system that switches off the amplifier after a defined period of time without an input signal.
Other improvements include new internal wiring and selected electronic components. The new MC462 AC delivers its 2x 450 watts with a barely perceptible total distortion of 0.005%. As is usual with McIntosh, thanks to Autoformer™ technology, full power is available for loudspeakers from 2 - 8 ohms.
And of course the MC462 AC also has classic McIntosh features like Power Guard®? (signal level monitoring), Sentry Monitor™ (short-circuit protection circuit) and the gold-plated speaker terminals, which ensure a high-quality signal to the speakers at all times.
Despite all the technical innovation, great importance was also attached to an optical redesign of the McIntosh design language: The front of this power amplifier bolide now has the new LED backlighting with the newly interpreted McIntosh blue color.
The two audio autoformers and the power transformer are housed in new, aesthetically pleasing cases. All three receive an attractive one-piece top cover with incorporated glass inserts, printed in the best McIntosh tradition, with the brand logo and winding details. Dominating the rear half of the amp are four high-efficiency McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks™ with an inlaid Mc logo.
With its overall appearance, the new MC462 AC stereo power amplifier is once again a successful reinterpretation of the McIntosh aesthetics admired throughout the HiFi world.
