Ortofon has been developing and producing moving magnet cartridges for more than 50 years. In addition to the proven moving coil pickups, the moving magnet models have earned a good reputation with music lovers and hi-fi enthusiasts all over the world. The new Ortofon OM 5 series comprises three basic pickups: OM 5S, OM 5E and Super OM 5E.
- The OM series is the lowest mass range of moving magnet cartridges from Ortofon.
- The housings of the OM cartridges have been designed so that they can be easily mounted and aligned on both top-mount and bottom-mount headshells.
- The OM 5 series offers excellent compatibility for use in a range of playback systems and with a wide variety of phono preamps
Optimal fit and sound reproduction
If your tonearm has a standard headshell or a cartridge holder, then you can switch to optimal sound reproduction with OM's. A look at each of these cartridges reveals Ortofon's answer to perfect tonearm fitting. A tiny, removable weight plate is hidden in the upper part of the bracket. If your tonearm is a standard tonearm, just leave the weight plate where it is. If your tonearm is one of the low mass types, just remove the weight. The mass of your OM pickup is then only 2.5 g.
The main improvements of the Super OM 5E
- With the help of computer simulations, it has been possible to define the natural pivot point of the system with previously unattainable accuracy and thereby achieve an optimal vibration balance. The result: improved linearity, higher channel separation and less distortion.
- The Super OM 5E has split pole PINs, which reduces the magnetic losses in the high frequency range. This technology extends the frequency range and improves the phase linearity.
- The housing of the Super OM 5 pickup is made of a Noryl (plastic-glass compound), which guarantees high rigidity and freedom from resonance.
The stylus of the Super OM 5E
The Super OM 5E is equipped with an elliptical stylus, which ensures a balanced and distortion-free reproduction. Due to their contoured shape, elliptical diamonds are able to follow the vibrations of the groove more precisely than spherical diamonds. This leads to better sampling and less distortion.
