In the build-up to our 50th anniversary, Cambridge asked their engineers a simple question – what would they make if anything was possible? Forget cost. Forget limitations. Create a system that delivers previously undiscovered layers of detail, is highly transparent, offering superlative sound-staging. A product true to Cambridge Audio’s foundations of creative innovation and entrepreneurial ambition. Over 3 years in the making, utilising a team of 9 engineers, the result is Edge.

British sound personified.

Five decades ago the Cambridge founders had a vision – to create hi-fi systems that delivered the Great British sound into people’s homes. Nothing added, nothing taken away. One of these talented engineers, Professor Gordon Edge, was the brains behind the innovation and design of the first product – the ground-breaking P40 integrated amplifier. In recognition of their heritage, Cambridge developed Edge. The embodiment of Cambridge Audio’s signature Great British Sound and the pinnacle of 50 years of Hi-Fi expertise. Beautifully minimal in its design, each component has a curved extruded aluminium front and floating top plate. It’s an extraordinary exterior that’s hiding some extraordinary audio engineering inside.

Twice the power

Edge M retains the characteristic clarity and musical depth of its Edge W stereo counterpart but, because each unit drives a single speaker, the power output of your system is effectively doubled. Because Edge M is fully balanced from input to output, it’s immune from noise and distortion.

Powerfully subtle

For all its power, Edge M is remarkably detailed. The sound is finely balanced, with a musical depth and clarity that comes through with every note. It’s all down to how they choose the componentry inside – nothing was picked on price, specs or measured performance. Cambridge listened carefully. And created the system with components that simply sounded the best. The end result is a power amplifier that truly brings an original recording to life like no other.

Short signal path

Although minimal in its exterior design, Edge M has some complex audio engineering inside. To remove the barriers between you and your music, they have worked hard to minimise the number of components in the signal path. As a result, Edge M delivers a more faithful reproduction of the original recording; an impressively detailed three-dimensional sound, with striking staging and focus.

More musical detail

Cambridge pioneered the use of toroidal transformers in amplifiers, which led to improved performance. In Edge they take this one step further, using opposing symmetry twin toroidal transformers. This cancels out electromagnetic interference whilst offering outstanding power and maintaining consistent tonality, no matter how loud it’s played.

Effortless power with minimal distortion

Using standard Class A amplifier technology wasn’t going to be efficient enough for Edge M. Instead Cambridge-Engineers added a bias current to a traditional Class AB design, reducing distortion to inaudible levels. This unique configuration also produces less heat and makes the whole system much more effective.

Edge systems are designed to work in perfect synchronisation. Match a pair of Edge Ms with our most versatile Preamplifier Network player, Edge NQ, to create a hi-fi system with a sound, and a look, unlike anything else.
