Lumin X2 Reference Networkplayer incl. DAC

The LUMIN X2 is a network music player whose core architecture is built around a custom-designed, fully discrete DAC stage. The device aims to convert the digital to the analog world with the highest possible precision by carefully optimizing circuit topology, component selection, power management, and clock distribution. This results in a signal chain optimized for maximum coherence, low susceptibility to noise, and precise channel separation.

Sound characteristics and converter architecture

The newly designed Dual-LUMIN Discrete DAC architecture forms the sonic heart of the X2. Thanks to its modular, fully discrete design, the conversion is no longer determined by standardized DAC chips, but by a circuit optimized for maximum integrity. This approach reduces timing errors, allows for direct implementation of the clocking structure without an intermediate frequency divider, and thus promotes noticeably more controlled signal reproduction. Combined with a new output buffer and output transformers, the design aims for a reduced noise floor, improved channel separation, and enhanced detail reproduction.

Processor, clocking and power supply

The X2 utilizes a state-of-the-art, high-performance LUMIN processing platform, enabling resampling and audio processing capabilities and supporting future expansion. Timing is ensured by a femto clock system with dual femto crystal oscillators and precise distribution via FPGA logic. The analog section employs a dual-mono design with a dual-stage, low-noise linear amplifier. The unit is powered by an external, solid aluminum dual-toroidal power supply; digital and analog sections are implemented separately to minimize interference.

Output stage and analog signature

The analog output stage is fully balanced and uses dual Lundahl output transformers as part of the signal path. Complemented by revised output transformer compensation and a new output buffer design, this is intended to deliver a balanced blend of clarity, microdynamics, and a warm, organic sound. IsoAcoustics decoupling feet are integrated into the bottom of the cabinet to reduce mechanical interference.

Network, connectivity and operation

With an industry-standard Gigabit SFP optical network port and an RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port, the X2 offers the option of galvanically isolating the device via optical networks or integrating it conventionally into a home network. An integrated network switch allows for the connection of other devices such as NAS. Digital outputs include USB with native DSD512 support and BNC S/PDIF; analog outputs are available as XLR and RCA. Electronic control is via the LUMIN app (iOS/Android) with features such as album artwork, playlist management, and search functions. Leedh processing technology, which uses a lossless method, is available for volume control.

Streaming features and file formats

The X2 supports a wide range of modern streaming protocols and services: UPnP AV/OpenHome, Roon Ready, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, as well as compatibility with Audirvana, AirPlay, and other services. The device can play various lossless and compressed formats; MQA playback is also supported. The platform offers gapless playback, on-device playlists, artwork caching, and advanced tag support.
