With the ND 555, Naim Audio redefines the benchmark for modern high-end streaming. Building on over four decades of development, this network player combines a state-of-the-art streaming platform with classic, uncompromising analog technology – creating a sonic performance that is consistently oriented towards the reality of live music.

Whether it's the raw energy of John Bonham or the virtuosic improvisations of John Coltrane – the ND 555 reproduces music with impressive naturalness, dynamics, and depth of detail. When combined with amplifiers from the Statement or 500 series, it unfolds its full potential, bringing the listening experience exceptionally close to a live performance.

Digital precision meets analog sound culture

At the heart of the ND 555 lies a completely redesigned streaming architecture. A powerful 40-bit SHARC DSP handles signal processing, upsampling incoming data to the highest precision. Unlike many other systems, the clock signal is not dictated by the source but controlled by the highly precise master clock of the integrated D/A converter – a crucial advantage for timing, rhythm, and musical coherence.

For signal transmission within the player, Naim is using the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) standard for the first time. This technology enables particularly high data rates with minimal power consumption and reduces interference to a minimum. This allows high-resolution formats up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD128 to be processed with exceptional stability and purity.

A particular highlight is the use of the legendary Burr-Brown PCM1704 DAC in a dual-mono configuration. This R2R converter enjoys cult status among connoisseurs and stands for exceptionally natural, musical reproduction – far removed from sterile digital sound.

Mechanical and electrical perfection

The ND 555 impressively demonstrates that sound quality is not solely a matter of signal processing. An elaborately constructed, spring-loaded brass sub-chassis effectively decouples all sound-relevant components from mechanical influences. Sensitive analog sections are additionally housed in separate chambers that act as Faraday cages, consistently shielding against electromagnetic interference.

The power supply also follows this uncompromising approach: A total of 13 discrete voltage regulators – including the Naim DR regulators familiar from the reference amplifiers – ensure an extremely stable and low-noise supply to all circuit sections. The power supply itself is external and housed in a separate enclosure to prevent any interference from electromagnetic fields. Operation requires the external 555 PS (DR) power supply, which forms the basis for the exceptional performance.

Architecture without compromise

The entire internal structure of the ND 555 is designed for maximum signal purity. Digital and analog sections are consistently separated and have their own ground connections. The streaming board and DSP are housed in a separate sub-enclosure to further minimize interference. Even the smallest details – from the selection of through-hole components to the optimized circuit routing – serve one clear goal: unadulterated sound.

Modern user interface, future-proof platform

Despite its uncompromising design, the ND 555 remains a contemporary and user-friendly control center. The Naim app for iOS and Android provides intuitive access to local music libraries, internet radio, and streaming services like TIDAL and Spotify. Thanks to integrated Chromecast technology, the system is also open to future applications and services.

A high-resolution color display on the front of the device presents cover art, track information, and system data with crystal-clear clarity. Operation is complemented by a high-quality, Zigbee-enabled metal remote control that works reliably even without direct line of sight.

Design and workmanship

Visually, the ND 555 is inspired by Naim's iconic reference components. The brushed finish of the chassis, reminiscent of models like the NAC 552, underscores its claim to be an uncompromising high-end device. The solid construction, combined with finely tuned mechanical elements, conveys the exceptional quality of this network player even to the touch.
