Audio-Technica AT-OC9X EB – Moving-coil cartridge of the current generation

The AT-OC9X EB series continues the long line of Audio-Technica MC cartridges. It is aimed at users seeking a precise tracking system with high resolution and stable channel separation. The focus is on controlled mechanical construction, clean signal transmission, and a wide selection of stylus profiles to suit different sonic priorities.

Moving-coil principle with extended transmission range

All models in the AT-OC9X series are based on a moving-coil design, optimized for low moving mass and direct signal conversion. The frequency response extends into the upper treble range and remains structured and stable even with complex material.

The channel separation of 25 dB at 1 kHz supports clear spatial imaging and clean stereo focusing, especially in dense mixes or demanding pressings.

Needle-shaped sections and construction variants for different systems

The series is available in several versions, which differ primarily in stylus shape and stylus carrier:

  • Elliptical (mounted or bare) for solid, musical tracking with good everyday usability.
  • Microlinear, Shibata and Special Line Contact for higher tracking precision and reduced distortion in the inner grooves

Depending on the model, either an aluminum or a boron cantilever is used. Due to its higher stiffness, boron enables particularly fast and low-loss signal transmission, which is especially relevant for higher-resolution styli.

Magnet and generator systems with differentiated design

Two generator designs are used within the series:

  • A system with a neodymium magnet and a yoke made of pure iron (e.g., AT-OC9XEB / AT-OC9XEN)
  • An improved system with a Permendur yoke (iron-cobalt alloy) for higher magnetic efficiency in the higher-quality versions.

This differentiated design serves to provide controlled energy in the generator without unnecessarily burdening the mechanical compliance of the system.

PCOCC coil material for defined signal transmission

The voice coils are made from high-purity copper produced using the Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) process. The aim is a uniform material structure with minimal crystal boundaries to reduce signal loss and microscopic nonlinearities in the current flow.

The result is a stable, consistent transmission of the generator signal with simultaneously high detail resolution.

Resonance control through aluminum housing

The housing is made of aluminum and is designed for mechanical stability while maintaining low resonance. The aim is to achieve the most controlled energy dissipation possible in order to minimize unwanted housing vibrations.

In practice, this contributes to a calmer overall character and improved detail in the midrange and treble.

Easy installation thanks to integrated threaded holes

The cartridges feature integrated threaded holes, allowing direct mounting to the headshell or tonearm. This enables installation with just two M2.6 screws, eliminating the need for separate nuts. This not only simplifies installation but also improves mechanical coupling.

Technical specifications (excerpt)

  • Frequency range: 20 – 30,000 Hz
