The Grado Signature S550 expands Grado Labs' Signature series with a model that combines sonic precision, craftsmanship, and adaptability in an exceptionally harmonious balance. Designed as an accessible entry into the manufacturer's high-end lineup, the S550 is technically clearly based on the larger Grado Signature S950, without compromising its high standards.
At its heart is a newly tuned 50mm driver, designed for precise imaging, stable dynamics, and authentic tonal colors. The open-back design with an enlarged rear air intake improves airflow behind the driver – a design detail that directly translates into more accurate spatial representation and controlled resonances. The result is a sound reproduction that remains analytical without becoming cold and sounds natural even during extended listening sessions.
The Brazilian walnut wood housing is not merely an aesthetic choice, but also acoustically relevant: the material properties contribute to balanced damping and support tonal coherence across the entire frequency range. Each headphone displays a unique grain pattern – a testament to the handcrafted production that has traditionally played a central role at Grado.
A key feature of the S550 is its adaptability. The new B-Cushions not only provide exceptional comfort but also influence the acoustic tuning. Simply swapping the cushions allows the headphones to be transformed from a more direct on-ear sound signature to a more open, spacious over-ear experience. This flexibility is further enhanced by interchangeable cables with 4-pin mini-XLR connectors, which also allow for balanced setups.
