With the Summit Makalu, JBL makes an impressive statement in the high-end segment. Named after the majestic Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world, this 3-way floorstanding speaker symbolizes size, power, and precision. The choice of name is no coincidence: The Makalu sits just 19 kilometers from Mount Everest and impresses with its striking pyramid shape – just as this speaker impresses with its sonic and visual appeal.
Sound power with technical sophistication
Equipped with a newly developed driver set, the Summit Makalu delivers exceptional clarity and dynamics. At its heart is JBL's patented D2830K dual-diaphragm, dual-motor compression driver. Paired with the large-format Sonoglass® HDI™ horn, this high-frequency range delivers impressive precision and spatial imaging.
The midrange and bass ranges are covered by an 8-inch midrange driver and a 12-inch woofer—both featuring innovative HC4 composite cone technology. This three-layer construction of carbon fiber, cellulose, and a closed-cell foam core enables maximum rigidity with low weight. The result: deep, contoured bass, powerful midrange, and exceptionally low distortion—even at high volumes.
Optimized signal routing for maximum performance
Another highlight is the JBL MultiCap™ crossover concept. It uses many smaller capacitors instead of fewer larger ones. This reduces electrical resistance, minimizes signal loss, and maximizes dynamics. The speaker can be operated in single-wire, bi-wire, or bi-amp mode, offering discerning music lovers maximum flexibility in amplifier selection.
Design that combines sound and aesthetics
The Summit Makalu's cabinet also sets standards. The softly curved side panels, with their elaborately damped multiple bracing, effectively suppress standing waves within. The combination of structural design and elegant finish—available in either high-gloss black with platinum accents or ebony veneer with gold details—makes the speaker an eye-catcher in any living space.

A detail with a big impact: The included JBL | IsoAcoustic® floor stands effectively decouple the speaker from the floor. This reduces unwanted vibrations and noticeably tightens the bass response. The soundstage benefits from clearer focus and noticeably improved spatial positioning.
