NAD has a long and successful history when it comes to turntables. Record players that always offered high quality and great sound, but on the other hand did not cost much.
In keeping with this philosophy, the C 558 is a record player that combines price awareness and top performance. And even if the majority of listeners are currently using digital technology, the record and the technology behind it are experiencing a small but certainly not insignificant renaissance.
Actually, the technology behind it isn't that complicated either. The turntable should rotate as evenly as possible at 33.3 RPM and the needle should scan the groove as perfectly as possible so that the system can implement any information contained on the record as perfectly as possible. No energy should be lost in the form of vibrations on the tonearm or platter. For this purpose, the C 558 relies on a power supply in which the AC voltage from the socket is first converted into DC voltage, which in turn is converted into AC voltage for the motor, so that it is completely quiet, trouble-free and also independent of the general one Quality of the power grid can run. The low-resonance, precision-machined sub-platter is driven by the motor via a special flat rubber belt, with the platter resting on a hardened steel shaft which in turn rests in a brass bearing. All, but really all parts of the C 558 have been carefully manufactured and selected to ensure that the plate runs as smoothly as possible.
Of course, careful attention was paid to every detail in the design and manufacture of the tonearm. With a length of 9 'it combines maximum directional stability with the highest possible rigidity and the lowest possible mass. In addition, the tracking force and azimuth can be set by yourself for the most precise possible scanning, even by hand, so that the record is played with the least possible distortion and wear.
The massive chassis and the glass plate also protect against negative influences such as vibrations and thus also help to elicit as much music as possible from each record. The chassis is made of CNC milled MDF and not, as is so often the case in this price range, made of chipboard or plastic. The cover hood is also made of low-resonance, heavy acrylic, with a special design of the hinges allowing the hood to be opened almost continuously.
Listening to a record can be a very haunting experience. You yourself are part of the whole, in the process of hearing. So that absolutely nothing of information is lost, the quality of the mechanical production of a record player is of the greatest importance. A properly played record is a wonderful experience, and the C 558 is all it takes.
