Ortofon MC X50 Moving Coil Cartridge

With the MC X50, Ortofon presents the most technologically advanced version of its proven MC X platform. Designed for discerning audiophiles, this moving coil system represents the pinnacle of an evolutionary development series. Within the MC X series, which is defined by a continuous increase in signal integrity and groove contact, the MC X50 marks the pinnacle of mechanical precision and acoustic consistency.

Through the systematic reduction of moving masses and the optimization of mechanical interfaces, the system delivers an unadulterated signal pickup with minimal distortion – even in the critical inner grooves of a record.

Precise scanning through a naked Micro-Ridge diamond

The heart of the Ortofon MC X50 is its nude diamond stylus with a Micro-Ridge profile. This highly developed geometry ensures an extremely precise and large-area contact zone with the groove walls of the record. The result is an exceptionally accurate reconstruction of complex and subtle modulations. Particularly in the high-frequency spectrum and in the narrow inner grooves of the vinyl interface, the Micro-Ridge profile reduces mechanically induced tracking errors to a physical minimum.

Material synergy: Boron needle carrier for maximum dynamics

To transmit the kinetic impulses picked up by the diamond stylus to the coil assembly without loss, Ortofon uses an extremely rigid boron cantilever in the MC X50. Boron combines exceptionally high flexural rigidity with extremely low moving mass. This material property enables the cartridge to track transient signal fluctuations immediately, quickly, and with a high degree of control. The resulting impulse response guarantees a detailed and spatially accurate reproduction of the original signal.

Specific damping system for uncompromising directional stability

A fundamental component for the overall acoustic performance of the MC X50 is the rubber suspension, developed and manufactured in-house by Ortofon. A specific material blend was applied for this model, precisely matched to the mechanical properties of the boron cantilever and the Micro-Ridge stylus. This damping system ensures perfectly balanced compliance, guarantees absolutely stable groove tracking, and maintains continuous physical contact with the record, even during complex passages.

The Evolution of the MC X-Series

The Ortofon MC X series represents a clearly defined, measurably and sonically verifiable development path in the moving coil cartridge segment. While the series begins with elliptical diamond profiles and aluminum cantilevers in its entry-level models, the path leads directly to the MC X50 via successive material and geometry upgrades. Each development step within the platform is reflected in a measurable optimization of groove contact and transient response. The MC X50 encapsulates these evolutionary stages, thus defining the upper limit in terms of detail and low distortion within this cartridge family.
