VERVE RECORDS: THE SOUND OF AMERICA

Jazz · Culture · Comedy · 70th Anniversary

The title is somewhat misleading, but not inaccurate: VERVE RECORDS: THE SOUND OF AMERICA is about jazz, a bit about American cultural history (so besides jazz, there's also stand-up comedy and the poet Jack Kerouac), but above all about the jazzy cultural treasures that Norman Granz collected with the Verve label. Mr. Granz is therefore the central figure, as he was responsible for the recordings on this album with his early jazz labels Clef Records and Norgran Records, and later with Verve.

70 Years of Verve Records

The recordings span the 1940s to the 1960s and feature artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, and Charlie Parker. The 4-LP box set also includes a twelve-page booklet with liner notes and commentary by Tad Hershorn, author of the biography "Norman Granz: The Man Who Used Jazz for Justice." While the vinyl edition offers a considerable amount of reading material, it also includes five additional tracks compared to the digital release. All tracks on the record are, of course, remastered. This release celebrates the 70th anniversary of one of the most important jazz labels in our solar system: Verve Records.
