The Thorens TD 1601 with the new TP 160 tonearm is a logical evolution of the multi-award-winning TD 1601, combining classic Thorens design features with modern, precisely tuned turntable technology. The high-quality wooden plinth underscores the turntable's timeless character, while the two-piece, machined aluminum platter and the precision-ground belt ensure precise and consistent rotation. The platter is driven by an electronically controlled synchronous motor, powered by the external TPN 1600 linear power supply. This power supply features a high-performance toroidal transformer and delivers 2 x 16 V to the synchronous motor. This ensures a particularly stable power supply and promotes optimal speed stability of the platter.
A key strength of the Thorens TD 1601 is its elaborately stabilized subchassis. The three conical springs rest on the base and are not suspended from the top board, thus achieving controlled decoupling of the subchassis. Additionally, a tensioned steel wire, extending from the axis of the motor pulley and platter spindle, prevents lateral wobble. This allows the subchassis to oscillate in a piston-like manner. Furthermore, the adjustable belt tension enables precise tuning of the drive system and complements the meticulously engineered turntable mechanism.
For exceptionally precise tracking, the TD 1601 is equipped with the newly developed TP 160 tonearm. Designed by renowned designer Helmut Thiele, this 9-inch tonearm features a J-shaped construction, both visually and technically inspired by classic studio tonearms. Its ultra-precise cutting edge bearing enables controlled tonearm movement. Additionally, the blade of the horizontal bearing is stabilized by magnets to ensure the most precise tracking possible. The SME headshell connector provides a convenient way to mount and change compatible cartridges.
Thorens also relies on a high-quality solution for signal transmission. In addition to unbalanced RCA outputs, the TD 1601 features balanced XLR outputs, enabling a professional connection to a phono preamplifier. Since the phono signal is particularly sensitive to electrical interference, balanced signal transmission helps to reduce noise on the connection between the turntable and the phono preamplifier. The features are rounded out by convenient functions such as the patented electric tonearm lift and the touchless end-of-record stop. The electric lift allows for easy operation of the tonearm, while the touchless end-of-record stop automatically terminates playback at the end of the record. Thus, the Thorens TD 1601 with TP 160 combines classic turntable technology, precise tonearm construction, and modern ease of use.
