Bryston BR-20 preamplifier – the versatile audiophile hub for analog and digital sources

The Bryston BR-20 combines high-quality analog preamplifier technology, a powerful high-resolution DAC, and integrated streaming in a single, uncompromisingly equipped chassis. With this, Bryston unites the advantages of several individual components into a central hub for modern high-end hi-fi systems. At the same time, this combination saves valuable rack space without compromising sound quality or connectivity.

At its heart is a fully discrete, symmetrical Class-A analog circuit, specifically designed for the BR-20. Years of development resulted in a new discrete operational amplifier engineered for exceptionally low noise and distortion. With a THD+N value of no more than 0.0006%, the preamplifier offers outstanding prerequisites for detailed, transparent, and spatially convincing sound reproduction.

The power supply was also consistently designed for the cleanest possible signal processing. Analog and digital circuits have separate power supplies, thus optimally decoupling the different circuit areas from each other. Relays at the inputs further ensure high-quality signal switching.

For volume control, Bryston uses a software-controlled, symmetrical architecture. A clearly visible LED ring around the volume control indicates the set volume even from a distance. Furthermore, digital inputs can be individually named and assigned to specific buttons on the device and remote control – practical for clear and easy operation of complex systems.

High-resolution DAC and integrated streaming

A particular strength of the BR-20 is the combination of an analog preamplifier and high-quality digital technology. The integrated high-resolution DAC supports resolutions up to PCM 384 kHz / 32-bit as well as DSD 4x. This allows the BR-20 to process high-resolution digital music data with a correspondingly high level of detail.

In addition, the device features an integrated high-resolution streamer that can play virtually any common file format in native resolution. The streaming system is conveniently operated via an intuitive web interface accessible from smartphones, tablets, or computers.

Numerous interfaces are already available for connecting to digital sources. These include AES/EBU, TOSLINK, S/PDIF, and USB. The optional HDMI module further expands the digital connectivity.

Flexible connection options

The BR-20 is designed for the central integration of a wide variety of audio sources. Two balanced and two unbalanced analog inputs allow for the connection of classic hi-fi components. One RCA input can optionally be replaced by an internal MM phono preamplifier – an attractive solution for vinyl enthusiasts who want to integrate their turntables directly.

The optional HDMI card provides four additional HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. The module supports 4K HDR and also enables DSD reception via HDMI. This allows the BR-20 to be easily integrated into modern audio/video systems.

The preamplifier offers two fully balanced outputs. The consistently symmetrical signal path of the analog section ensures particularly low-noise transmission and enables optimal combination with high-quality power amplifiers.

Headphones are also well catered for with the BR-20. The integrated low-Z headphone amplifier has been optimized compared to previous Bryston solutions and features a lower output impedance and increased power. This allows the integrated headphone section to effortlessly drive even demanding headphones.

In addition to its sonic qualities, the BR-20 impresses with its extensive control options. The BR-4 remote control is included. Furthermore, RS232 and network connections are available, allowing the preamplifier to be integrated into sophisticated automation and multi-room environments.

The combination of individually programmable source assignment, network control, and extensive interface options makes the BR-20 a particularly flexible control center. At the same time, operation remains intuitive thanks to the clear front panel design and the easy-to-read display.
