The AOS is an uncompromisingly engineered, fully adjustable moving-coil preamplifier whose circuit design is largely based on the award-winning Aura Reference MC phono stage. Housed in a custom-made, half-standard Rega chassis, the AOS delivers exceptional definition, enhanced spaciousness, and a level of realism that makes vinyl recordings come alive.
Versatility for moving-coil systems
The AOS was specifically designed for a wide range of moving-coil cartridges. It offers sufficient gain even for systems with very low output voltage while allowing for precise load matching. Resistance and capacitance are flexibly adjustable, making it possible to optimally tune the preamplifier to virtually any MC cartridge.
Purely analog concept
As a purely analog amplifier, the AOS completely forgoes digital control circuitry. The solid aluminum housing effectively protects the internal circuitry from radio frequency interference (RFI). At the same time, the signal path has been deliberately kept minimalist, using only those components that are sonically essential.
An integrated self-adjusting servo control compensates for temperature fluctuations during operation and ensures consistent performance. Parallel-connected, low-noise FET transistors operate as a compound pair and prevent bias currents from flowing through the pickup coil. This leaves the sensitive magnetic geometry of the pickup unaffected.
The MC input accepts resistive loads from 70 Ω to 400 Ω and capacitive loads from 1000 pF to 4300 pF. Additionally, the input sensitivity can be adjusted by 6 dB on the rear panel.
Technical Highlights at a Glance
- Dedicated moving-coil phono stage
- Fully adjustable load matching
- Factory preset for Rega MC cartridges
- Circuit design based on the Aura MC reference stage
- Custom-made aluminum enclosure in half the standard size
- Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects
First amplifier stage
The first amplifier stage operates as a symmetrical, complementary Class-A amplifier using ultra-low-noise FET transistors from Linear Systems. Thanks to this FET technology, no bias current flows through the pickup coil.
Furthermore, the input circuitry omits coupling capacitors between the cartridge output and the FET input transistors, thus avoiding potential sonic degradation. Carefully selected and matched transistors ensure maximum performance and drive the passive high-frequency section of the RIAA equalization.
Second amplifier stage
The second amplifier stage is designed as a symmetrical Class A differential amplifier and uses a driver stage in a common-base configuration. This simultaneously handles the active amplification in the low-frequency range of the RIAA equalization, ensuring precision, dynamics, and a high degree of transparency.
