FLEA – HONORA
Alternative jazz · fusion · jazz
On the rather atypical album “One Hot Minute,” the somewhat greater influence of Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is clearly evident. Sales figures were correspondingly disappointing, especially compared to its predecessor, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik.” You might think that doesn't exactly speak in favor of Flea as a solo artist? But what if “One Hot Minute” is actually one of the band's better albums? Flea is a fascinating musician who simply transcends it—above mainstream music, above the dangerous aspects of the rock star life, and above the Red Hot Chili Peppers themselves. This is clearly audible on his album HONORA.
As a young man, Flea learned to play the trumpet. He only later came to rock music. On HONORA, we naturally hear his signature slap bass and, of course, Flea's trumpet performance. There's prominent support from Nick Cave and Thom Yorke, as well as a unique version of the jazz classic "Willow Weep for Me." Perhaps it could be called fusion jazz – in any case, when producing HONORA, he was less concerned with sales figures and more focused on the music itself. Available from mid-May.
