MILES DAVIS – FOUR & MORE
Jazz · Live · Uptempo
It begins with applause – on February 12, 1964, Miles Davis, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and George Coleman took to the stage of Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. On FOUR & MORE, the electric atmosphere of that evening is palpable, especially through the selection of tracks. The songs were divided: an uptempo album (the one at hand) and a ballad-like album with the all-too-familiar title My Funny Valentine were released. The tempo on FOUR & MORE is truly breathtaking. The musicians, who at that point had only been playing together for about a year, were perfectly in sync and made no mistakes. The gentlemen communicated with each other through music, exchanging jokes, making their statements, and completely coming alive through this interplay.
WITH BACK TO THE WORLD
Miles Davis, who preferred communicating with the band rather than the audience, demonstrates once again on FOUR & MORE the importance of the art of interplay on stage. In an industry that had already transformed into a commercial monster in the 1960s, the great jazz composer focused solely on the music and, as always, turned his back on his audience (and the rest of the world). This did nothing to diminish the atmosphere. Anyone who had the chance to hear Miles Davis live is truly fortunate.
