Aurender A20 – Network player with dual-mono DAC and analog output stage

The Aurender A20 is an analog network player with integrated D/A conversion, designed for systems that combine streaming, DAC, and preamplification in a single, technically consistent unit. It is based on the larger A30 model, but deliberately omits integrated CD ripping and built-in storage in favor of greater flexibility.

The focus is on the combination of streaming platform, dual-mono DAC and analog output stage – designed for direct connection to amplifiers or active systems.

DAC architecture and signal processing

The conversion is handled by a dual-mono configuration with two AKM4497 DACs. Each channel is processed separately, ensuring clean channel separation and stable spatial imaging. The A20 processes high-resolution PCM and DSD data up to the highest resolution levels and integrates a full MQA decoder.

Clock generation is handled by an FPGA-based system with very low jitter. Optional upsampling to up to 705.6 / 768 kHz can be enabled. Alternatively, the signal remains unchanged in its original format.

Analog section and system integration

The A20 features balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) outputs. Volume control is lossless at the DAC level, allowing the device to be connected directly to a power amplifier. In many configurations, the A20 thus replaces a separate preamplifier.

The analog output stage is designed for compatibility with different amplifier concepts and allows for clear integration into existing systems.

Digital inputs and expandability

Four digital inputs extend the functionality beyond simple streaming. External sources such as CD players or TV audio can be directly connected and processed via the internal DAC section.

  • 1 × Coax RCA
  • 1 × Coax BNC
  • 2 × Optical (Toslink)

This means the A20 also takes on the role of a central digital converter for multiple sources.

Storage and usage concept

Unlike the A30, the A20 features two freely accessible 2.5" drive bays. These can be equipped with SSDs or HDDs as needed. Alternatively, pure streaming operation without internal data storage is possible.

This architecture allows for flexible adaptation to different usage scenarios without a fixed storage capacity.

Headphone operation

In addition to the speaker output, the A20 features an integrated headphone amplifier with a 6.3 mm jack. This is functionally designed and allows direct operation of high-quality headphones without additional components.

Power supply and system design

The power supply is based on a fully linear architecture with multiple separate transformers for the server, DAC, and signal processing. This separation reduces mutual interference within the system.

An integrated supercapacitor UPS ensures stability during power outages and enables a controlled shutdown.

Display and operation

The 8.8-inch IPS display shows cover art and playback information in high resolution. It is controlled via the Aurender Conductor app, which is designed for a stable, closed system environment.
